Abstract. This article examines the origins of the Crimean Ulusbek, Kutlug Timur. Kutlug Timur is known to have been a representative of the Jochid administration in Crimea and to have come from the influential Qiyat clan. However, Abu Bakr Qalandar, the author of a comprehensive theological work, introduced into scholarly circulation and who dedicated a separate chapter to this Crimean ruler, identified him as a Seljuk by origin. This issue has generated some debate, as it is believed that the Crimean Ulusbeks were of the Qiyat clan. On the other hand, Abu Bakr Qalandar’s account, given its reliability, is also beyond doubt. The author of this work believes that Ottoman historical writings support the assertion that Kutlug Timur was indeed a Seljuk on his mother’s side.
