Abstract. In the multifaceted creative heritage of Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko, a special place belongs to literary translations of the works of many European authors, as well as literary studies, which comprehend the significant phenomena and trends of the world literary process. I. Franko combines the talent of a researcher-analyst and a translator in his creative practice. Such is the article “Crimean Khan Gazi Giray (1588–1607) and some of his poems”, which is one of the most eloquent evidence of the oriental interests of the writer and scientist. Significant attention to the poetic creativity of the outstanding Crimean khan and poet is paid in the study of Agathangel Krymsky “Literature of the Crimean Tatars”. Ivan Franko and A. Krymsky examine the deeply dramatic life path of Gazy Giray Khan, who has chosen the pseudonym Gazai, and they also examine the circumstances of the appearance of his amazing works. In his translations, I. Franko, although does not adhere to the versification forms inherent to Eastern poetry, is trying to adapt them to the Ukrainian traditions, still quite accurately recreates the original imagery, life-affirming pathos, richness and sophistication of intonations inherent in the author’s poetic speech.
